Taking the
best from the country that brought us ‘Hello Kitty’ and
samurai, designers Fern Levack and Damion Fuller have perfected
the art of streetwear.
Back from a recent world trip, winners
of ‘Best Streetwear
Designers’ at the Australian Fashion Awards 2004, ‘Kitten’ were
ready to take the next step. Fern and Damion opened their first
store in Sydney’s Paddington.

Fashion
as a lifestyle: music books and fashion
|
On
the corner of Glenmore Road and Oxford Street the very gateway
to glam-central - the store showcases the designer’s complete
range. They’ve got their 70's biker denim with its beautiful
hand finishing worn by Kirsten Dunst and their cult bikinis worn
by Clare Danes.
But to give their store the same look
of love they give their clothes, books and CDs, the pair got
creative. As original
artworks
feature on their clothes, the same impulses can be seen scanned
and printed on Vutek Self Adhesive Vinyl. Damion’s drawings
now cover two whole walls of their store, across the built in shelving
and air-conditioning units. We can only presume that he was suppressed
as a kid for drawing on the walls at home!
Fern and Damion are big
into books and music. They’ve designed
a custom wall carrying CDs and novels that they believe every Kitten
customer should experience.
Although Hollywood actresses are now wearing
their clothes, Fuller and Levack are keen to keep the range close
to the Australian shores
that initially inspired it.
"Our designs draw very strongly
on the Australian beach culture and our active lifestyle, because
the rest of the world has always looked to us for that," said
Fern when she was interviewed by the Sunday Telegraph last year.
