One of the great examples of new retail design at Westfield Bondi Junction is the Quiksilver Boardriders Club. This concept store boasts two levels with 500 sqm of retail space, showcasing their signature use of rich visuals, infusing the ocean surroundings with imagery depicting the passion and adventure of boardriding.

Step into Quiksilver’s underwater world

Chris Athas, owner of Surfection, licensees for Quiksilver in New South Wales, says that the key objective of the design was to bring the brand into the store in a unique way.

“ We wanted to create a feeling that would let customers acknowledge the boardriding lifestyle that is synonymous with Quiksilver.” says Chris.
Well-known Sydney architect Ian Halliday designed the store and says that the architectural features created a challenge.

“The store has two frontages, one on Oxford St and one in the arcade. They are both large but different spaces that we needed to marry to lead the eye through the store,” says Ian.

This challenge, combined with the aim to create an environment that captured the essence of the Quiksilver brand, led to the installation of 45 lightboxes to create an ‘underwater’ feel to the store.

Retail design takes a ride at Quiksilver Boardriders Club

Simon Buttonshaw is the retail merchandiser for Quiksilver. He is responsible for ensuring that the integrity and identity of the brand, and boardriding in general, are maintained in the retail environment. The Bondi Junction store pays homage to the long boardriding history of Bondi Beach, including an extensive display of Bondi’s most famous surfer – Cheyne Horan.

Both Chris and Ian agree that overall the Westfield Bondi Junction complex is an impressive sign of things to come for retail design.
