Making history at Brisbane Markets It's hard to believe that the current 77 hectare Brisbane Markets Complex had such humble beginnings. From the early days of Brisbane, there were street hawkers who sold their fruit and vegetables door to door, but in 1868 the first Brisbane Central Markets opened on the riverfront at Market and Charlotte Streets.
The Markets have had a few locations over their history and this information only lived in peoples memories and it was high time the history of the markets was recorded. So for the first time the Markets now have their history recorded in one place, with tangible objects.
D10, a design company in Brisbane worked on the concept to create the History Room from collateral collected over the last 2 years. We worked with D10 to come up with all the components and products used.
One of the objectives of the mini museum is to keep it fresh by changing and updating the graphics and content, keeping it's history alive by adding new stories and memorabilia.
Much of the colour and tales of the History Room have been collected from the market community, the wholesalers, growers, retailers and their families, who contributed to the growth of the Brisbane Markets. Come and see their story...
"It is so modern even though the story is all about history but that's how people will relate to it. The use of photos on half the windows was inspired, allowing the light to stream in. It's great to have the ability to change the displays and the concept of being able to freshen it up or rotate different pieces through at different times. I'm so proud of what you have produced."
