Carriageworks at Eveleigh - Sydney’s new home for contemporary arts. Developed by the NSW State Government through Arts NSW, the Eveleigh Rail Yards at Wilson Street has been transformed into a bold new centre committed to the nurturing, development and presentation of contemporary arts. Designed by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, the former Carriageworks was a long brick-walled shed with, repetitive iron-framed gabled bays, where carriages were built and repaired for over a century.
It now accommodates emerging contemporary performance-based artists, comprising of three large flexible theatres, rehearsal spaces, workshops and an administration centre. Generous foyer areas fill the volume towards the street.
The dramatic entrance signage that is lit up from inside the structure at night was designed by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer with the graphic design by Mollison Communications. The graphics, printed on low PVC Ecotex, are just as bright by daylight.
In the foyer area the interior 'curtain' was created by printing directly to aluminum composite panels (the was image supplied by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer and graphic design by Jelly Design).
Clear Self Adhesive Vinyl (printed in reverse) with white backing was used so that it could be applied to the inside of the glass. This eliminated the possibility of vandalism from outside the building. Graphics are then front lit at night from outside the building. Photography: Michael Nicholson and M Mischkulnig.
