Flash executes the great Westfield cover up…

…we challenge you to tell the difference!

Westfield's total renovation and refurbishment of the Centerpoint complex has been an ongoing project. Transforming what was multiple malls into a single flowing space. With a majority of the centre now open, refurbishment is still underway on the upper levels. This has created an aesthetic and privacy issue for level 7 because the level is viewable and accessible from below. Furthermore, ongoing construction created a safety issue, areas needed to be secure from active Westfield tenants in proximity to the ongoing work as well as the flow of public traffic.

The security and safety issues were easily solved with temporary hordings but the plain hordings lacked aesthetics. The solution was found with the help of the beautiful wood panelling outside the level 7 foyer of JP Morgan. Flash was commissioned to produce Custom Wallpaper to replicate the existing wood panelling which was then hung on the floor to ceiling hoardings that concealed the continuing construction.

The custom wallpaper created an indistinguishable continuity from the original wood panelling and provided an authentically pleasing, albeit temporary, barrier between the retailing and refurbishment activity.

The design and production of the wallpaper was undertaken by the in house studio at Flash, requiring an exceptionally fast turn around. From design to installation took just six days. A section of the wood paneling was initially photographed in various lighting situations to obtain an optimum image. The images were then retouched in Photoshop. The final file was sized to match the original panels and then tiled to form a continuous wood panel image, from which the wallpaper rolls were then printed.

The installation of over 300 square metres of wallpaper took a team of four just 3 days, requiring the assembly of scaffolding and the use of a scissor lift for large sections of the wallpaper. Meticulous attention to detail was required to create a seamless transition from original to faux.

So when in town, take the Westfield challenge and see if you can tell the difference!
